Abstract

Library automation refers to the use of information technology to streamline, manage, and deliver library services such as cataloguing, circulation, acquisition, and reference. In recent years, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative force in library automation by enabling intelligent, data-driven, and user-centric solutions. AI applications—ranging from natural language processing to machine learning and robotics—are being integrated into library systems to enhance operational efficiency, personalize user experience, and improve resource accessibility. This study aims to explore the role of AI in advancing library automation through a descriptive approach supplemented with real-world case studies. By analyzing AI-driven implementations across different types of libraries, the paper highlights key areas where AI has shown impact: intelligent cataloguing, virtual chatbots, recommendation systems, robotic book handling, and automated digitization. The findings reveal that AI significantly enhances the responsiveness, accuracy, and scalability of library services. However, challenges related to data privacy, infrastructure costs, and workforce readiness remain critical. The study concludes that while AI holds immense potential in shaping the future of libraries, its successful adoption requires strategic planning, ethical oversight, and capacity building. These insights are essential for library professionals, educators, and policymakers striving to create smarter knowledge ecosystems.
