SUSTAINABLE FINANCE MODELS FOR GREEN TECHNOLOGY ADOPTION IN INDIAN BUSINESSES

Abstract

India’s transition toward a low-carbon economy necessitates substantial investment in green technologies, underpinned by robust sustainable finance models. This study examines the evolving landscape of green finance in India, highlighting the rapid growth of Green, Social, Sustainability, and Sustainability-linked (GSS+) instruments, which expanded 186% to USD 55.9 billion by 2024. Using a mixed-method approach, the research analyzes financial flows, policy frameworks, and case studies ranging from corporate green bonds to innovative SME rooftop solar financing models. Findings reveal strong domestic capital participation (83% of mitigation finance) but limited international inflows, alongside persistent barriers such as regulatory gaps and SME access constraints. The study underscores the role of instruments like sovereign green bonds, ESG-linked loans, and blended finance in accelerating renewable adoption, and offers policy recommendations to bridge the USD 150-170 billion annual funding gap required to meet India’s 2030 climate targets.
