Abstract

Heterotrophic bacteria play an important role in food web. The diversity  distribution of heterotrophic bacteria in the near shore habitats along Visakhapatnam coast   was carried out for two years from May 2014 to May 2016.   The  study recorded the occurrence of 46 species of  heterotrophic bacteria in the near shore waters and sediments along Visakhapatnam coast.  They belong  to  Bacillus (16 species), Vibrio (11 species), Pseudomonas  (9 species),  Staphylococcus  (6 species) and Micrococcus  (4 species)  genera of the heterotrophic bacteria.  The heterotrophic bacteria  diversity distribution is compared with  similar investigations carried out elsewhere.
