THE USE OF SARACA ASOCA (ASHOKA) BARK AS A RELIEF AGENT FOR MENSTRUAL PAIN: A PHYTOCHEMICAL AND PHARMACOLOGICAL REVIEW

Abstract

Primary dysmenorrhea, or painful menstruation, is a widespread condition driven by excessive uterine prostaglandin production. While non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are the standard treatment, their efficacy is not universal, and they carry a risk of adverse effects, prompting interest in phytotherapeutic alternatives. Saraca asoca (Roxb.) De Wilde, the Ashoka tree, is revered in Ayurvedic medicine as a principal remedy for gynecological disorders.

 Chemical analysis reveals a rich profile of bioactive compounds, including flavonoids (catechin, epicatechin), tannins, saponins, sterols (β-sitosterol), and specific flavanol glycosides. These constituents underpin a multi-target pharmacological profile, including analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects mediated through the inhibition of cyclooxygenase (COX) and lipoxygenase (LOX) pathways, a proposed uterine-modulating (antispasmodic and tonic) action, and hormonal-balancing properties demonstrated in preclinical models. This paper concludes that while substantial preclinical evidence supports the traditional use of S. asoca bark for menstrual pain, its transition to an evidence-based therapeutic is contingent upon addressing critical research gaps, including the need for standardized botanical materials and rigorous, single-herb, placebo-controlled clinical trials.
