Abstract

The 5E instructional model is a framework for teaching science that includes five stages: Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate. It's designed to facilitate inquiry-based learning, allowing students to actively participate in the learning process through exploration and discovery. Each stage serves a specific purpose in helping students build understanding and retain knowledge. These five phases guide a teacher to plan, organise and implement the teaching- learning activities in an effective manner in the classroom. This model has gained immense acceptance in the field of school education in order to enhance the teaching- learning experiences and boost the academic achievement of the students in various subjects. Science is a compulsory subject at Elementary level schools in Odisha. Teachers can tailor the activities and materials in each stage to meet the diverse needs of their students, whether through modifications, extensions, or differentiation strategies. This inclusivity ensures that all students have opportunities to participate meaningfully and achieve success in their learning. In this method the researcher used quantitative experimental method. The result shows using 5E Instructional Model has enhanced the achievement, engagement and retention of the secondary school students.
