Abstract

Since its origin in December 2019, COVID-19 or SARS-CoV-2, has spread throughout the world in a very short time and like many countries, India too, adopted strict lockdowns measures. With the imposition of mandatory quarantine, restrictions in travel, curbs in industrial activities, the crisis period has proved to be a blessing for the environment.  Various reports have suggested improvements in the quality of air, cleaner rivers and a bloom in wildlife. India has always been a hub of pollution - with a large population, congested cities and towns, heavy traffic and polluting industries- the air quality index (AQI) values have always been significantly high in most cities. However, with the implementation of the national lockdown, cities in India, such as Delhi, witnessed significant improvements in air quality. Major rivers such as the Yamuna and Ganga saw improvements in its water quality. This review aims to discuss the effect of the COVID-19 lockdown on environment during pre and post lockdown of this pandemic situation.
