IMPACT OF AI ON CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT AND TEACHING PRACTICES IN HIGHER EDUCATION IN INDIA

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a transformative force in the global education sector, offering innovative solutions to long-standing challenges in curriculum design and teaching practices. In the context of India, where higher education plays a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s socio-economic development, the integration of AI presents both opportunities and challenges. This paper examines the impact of AI on curriculum development and teaching practices in Indian higher education. It explores how AI enables personalized learning, adaptive curricula, interdisciplinary integration, and stronger industry-academia collaboration. Additionally, it highlights the ways in which AI-driven teaching practices—such as intelligent tutoring systems, automated assessments; predictive analytics, and immersive learning environments are reshaping the role of educators and enhancing student engagement. The study also underscores the benefits of AI integration, including improved learning outcomes, institutional efficiency, inclusivity, and employability enhancement. However, it equally emphasizes the challenges of implementation, including resistance to change, infrastructural and financial constraints, ethical and data privacy concerns, and the risk of over-reliance on technology. The findings suggest that while AI cannot replace the human dimensions of education, it can serve as a powerful enabler when implemented thoughtfully and ethically. For India, the way forward lies in embracing AI through strategic investments, robust policy frameworks, and faculty training, ensuring that technology complements rather than substitutes human teaching. This balanced approach can transform higher education into a more dynamic, equitable, and globally competitive system, contributing significantly to national progress.
