Abstract

The CAMEL model has emerged as a widely accepted framework for evaluating the financial performance and stability of banks. This study critically examines the effectiveness of the CAMEL model, focusing on its benefits and limitations within the banking sector. The model assesses banks across five key dimensions: Capital Adequacy, Asset Quality, Management Efficiency, Earnings, and Liquidity, providing a structured and comprehensive evaluation of financial health. Its systematic approach assists regulators, investors, and bank management in identifying strengths, weaknesses, and potential risks, thereby supporting prudent decision-making and maintaining overall financial stability. While the CAMEL model offers advantages such as simplicity, comparability, and the ability to detect early warning signals, it also faces significant limitations. Its reliance on historical data, quantitative focus, and limited consideration of market, technological, and qualitative factors restrict its predictive power in the contemporary banking environment. The study suggests enhancements to the framework, including integration with market sensitivity measures, incorporation of qualitative and digital risk indicators, and adoption of real-time data analytics and stress-testing tools. Overall, the CAMEL model remains a fundamental tool in banking evaluation, but its relevance and accuracy can be significantly improved through modernization and adaptation to evolving financial dynamics.
