Abstract

This abstract provides a comprehensive overview of financial inclusion within India, examining its historical trajectory, key policy interventions, persistent obstacles, and notable achievements. Financial inclusion, understood as the equitable access to and usage of affordable financial services for all segments of the population, particularly those traditionally underserved, has been a central pillar of India's developmental strategy. The abstract traces the progression from initial efforts aimed at expanding physical banking infrastructure to contemporary strategies leveraging digital technologies. It highlights significant programs and regulatory measures, such as the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), the evolution of the Business Correspondent model, and the acceleration of digital payment systems, analyzing their influence on broadening access to banking, credit, insurance, and retirement planning. Furthermore, the abstract identifies critical challenges impeding full inclusion, including geographical remoteness, low levels of financial literacy, inadequate infrastructure in certain areas, and the viability of service delivery models for low-income communities. Finally, it evaluates the progress achieved, noting increases in formal account ownership, growth in digital transactions, and greater economic formalization, while emphasizing the ongoing need to deepen engagement with financial services and ensure their effective utilization by all citizens.
